Scotland is the northernmost of the three countries that make up Great Britain, accounting for roughly a third of the island and sharing a 96-mile border with England to its south. Scotland itself is sparsely populated, with over 70% of people living in the central belt of towns and cities that sit between the Clyde and Forth rivers.

What Sort Of Landscape And Natural Features Are There In Scotland?

Scotland is essentially a country divided into three habitats. The desolate, beautiful Highlands and Islands which make up the northerly section of the country are a mountainous region formed during the last Ice Age. The low-lying central belt is far more geologically active, rich in the coal and iron which fuelled the Industrial Revolution and flecked with (largely inactive) volcanoes. The Borders, to the south of the country, are noted for steep hills and sweeping valleys, similar to the ones you would find to the south of the English border.

The country is particularly noted for its water: both the water that falls out of the sky as rain and also the many freshwater lochs in which it gathers. It is also famous for its beaches: Scotland is made up of 790 different islands, adding up to thousands of miles of coastline for you and your canine companion to explore.
